Pack to Plate is the brainchild of past University of Georgia MPA students Sam Perren, Sarah Sheehan, and Amanda Newell. The organization was granted official 501c3 tax-exempt status in October of 2014.
Mentored by UGA faculty members Dr. Grace Bagwell-Adams and Dr. David Bradford, they began to work together with one common purpose--to come up with a policy solution that would address the food-related inequalities prevalent in Athens. Again and again, they heard community workers and educators talking about food security and how getting kids to want to eat healthy, even if they have plenty of healthy food, is a major challenge. The seemingly intractable problems the community faces in the areas of poverty and health disparities are all touched by this issue.
Fueled by a call for action from the Fels National Policy Challenge, they worked to create a realistic solution, making Pack to Plate something that would address a real need, eventually turn into something they could (and would) actually do, and have the potential for other communities to adopt (a turn-key solution).
